Abaco Inshore Forecast – January 2012

Peter Mantle wading on the flats hooked up with an Abaco bonefish.

January is normally the coolest month of the winter. With the cooler water temperature, we fish flats that are closer to the deep water. Here is where you’ll find schools of fish. At low tide, they will be tailing and feeding. At high tide, there will be more single and double fish together. And, there is always a chance for permit, tarpon, barracuda and sharks.

We prefer using an eight-weight fly rod with a 10-foot 10-pound leader using a #6 fly in light-medium tan or even a light pink for bonefish. When targeting permit and tarpon, we recommend a heavy fly rod with a 12-to-15 pound test leader. For barracuda or shark, use a wire leader. For light tackle, use a 6-foot spinning outfit with 8 pound or 10 pound test line with live or artificial bait. The fishing is great here on the Cherokee Flats or the Marls. We also offer reef fishing and snorkeling trips. We’re just a phone call or an email away. Hope to see you soon in Abaco!
