Abaco Inshore Forecast – January 2013

An 18 pound permit caught by Ian Davis of Yellow Dog Flyfishing Adventures while fishing the Abaco Marls out of The Delphi Club. It took a size 2 Enrico Puglisi white crab fly with orange legs. Guided by Ishy Williams. PHOTO SUPPLIED BY BONEFISH HEAVEN.

[dropcap]M[/dropcap]ost Januarys, the water temperature is really cool. So we tackle the flats that lay next to deeper water. But don’t let that scare you. Fishing is still good and you’ll be seeing more singles and doubles, as well as a lot of tails in the shallow waters. January is also a great month for permit.

Wading the flats is always fun. Stalking the fish as if you are the predator chasing the prey. To cast that prefect cast, lay the fly just a foot or two in front of the fish. Strip, strip and bam! You got him. It’s always a thrill and something everyone should experience if they haven’t before. Even though I have caught many fish wading, when I do hook up one when wading, I still get excited!

Tackle we recommend is an 8-weight fly rod with 10 foot long 10 pound test leader and #6 flies. I like using light pink to medium tan colors. For permit, our recommendation is a 10-weight fly rod with a 10 to 12 foot long 15 to 20 pound test leader. Choose crab pattern flies.

If you would like to book a trip, I am just one email or phone call away. We also offer reef fishing and snorkeling trips.
