Friends of the Environment and the Abaco Cancer Society challenge you to paddle for a cause! The two Abaco based non-profits are partnering on the Abaco Kayak Challenge, Up a Creek With a Paddle – an event to encourage the public to be healthy and enjoy our beautiful environment. The Kayak Challenge is set for Saturday, October 15 at Abaco Beach Resort in Marsh Harbour. Any craft you can paddle is welcome (kayaks, paddle boards, canoes) – just no engines! In addition to the paddle, there will be a beach party at Abaco Beach Resort, which will feature food, drink and live music by New Entry! This event promises to be a great day of family fun.
Challenge participants may choose from an extending 7, 12 or 20 mile course that will be marked off with buoys for the event. Support boats will be spaced along the challenge route to aid paddlers. All of the courses follow the east coast of Great Abaco, and the longer ones venture into the beautiful creeks at Snake Cay, a portion of the proposed East Abaco Creek National Park. The proposed park extends beyond the course at Snake Cay to the Bight of Old Robinson and the Cherokee Creek system, three interconnected nursery areas for conch, crawfish, grouper, snapper and other marine species.
If you wish to participate, but do not have a kayak, please contact Friends of the Environment, as we have a list of kayaks available on the island.
Proceeds from the Challenge will benefit the local work of Friends of the Environment and the Abaco Cancer Society. For information on how you can help, please email kwilliams@friendsoftheenvironment.org.
