Abaco Offshore Fishing Forecast – August 2011

Capt. Perry Thomas recommends targeting yellowtail snapper, strawberry group and trigger fish this month.

Offshore fishing is always seasonal and cyclical in nature. This is true for Abaco, as well as the rest of the Islands of the Bahamas. With over 100,000 square miles of water in the country, migratory fish have a large playground. Late July and into August, the offshore billfish action slows but does not die, so you just have to work a little harder and a little longer.

Blue marlin are still showing but you will need to try various baits, troll at different speeds and work hard to find out what will work on a given day. The key action for August will be bottom fishing. Most locals are fishing outside the cuts between the cays on an incoming tide. Good action will occur in 70-to-100 feet of water. Favored baits are squid and octopus with a chum bag. Best species to target are yellowtail snapper, strawberry grouper, and trigger fish – both queen and ocean. Off the full moon, the mutton snapper bite should be pretty strong. Winds and sea conditions should be very favorable for pleasant days offshore. Keep in mind when planning your day, occasional afternoon thunder storms are prevalent this time of year.
