The word from Abaco is that the fishing is red hot! Kevin Sawyer at Island Boy Tackle reports dolphin are showing up in good numbers, and the wahoo bite is still fairly strong, but will fade as we get into March. A quick conversation with Kevin revealed, “Dolphin are showing up earlier this year. We don’t normally see this kind of action until April.”

While most fish are in the 12 to 15-pound range, many 35 to 40-pounders are being reeled in. Most of the catches are occurring from Man-O-War Cay south to Cherokee Sound. In addition to the dolphin bite, Kevin reported plenty of blackfin tuna are in the mix, in the range of 8 to 12 pounds, along with some yellowfin tuna. The best working colors are green/white, blue/white, pink and pink/white.

Michael Sawyer, marina manager at Treasure Cay Resort and Marina, reported pretty much the same scenario; lots and lots of dolphin, with some blackfin and yellowfin tuna. He said the wahoo bite has also slowed in Treasure.

Glen Kelly, the Harbormaster and Town Manager at Schooner Bay, says the boys in South Abaco are experiencing the same situation; still some wahoo around and lots of dolphin. Frigate birds are nesting and staying close to shore, so keep your eyes peeled, as they often follow the dolphin just offshore. Large mats of sargassum weed are appearing in the South Abaco area, so he suggests anglers follow the weed lines. Glen also said possible shots at marlin or sailfish are likely.

Looks like Abaco promises some great Bahamas fishing in March!
