Starting in the north, Michael Sawyer, marina manager at Treasure Cay Resort Hotel and Marina said, “the April bite slowed, due mostly to weather and wind. What is interesting is that there typically is a good dolphin run in late April/early May, however, there was a strong dolphin bite in February and anglers are wondering if the February run has taken the place of the typical May run.” Time will tell. Michael also says to expect the blue marlin bite to pick up considerably. At the time of this forecast, the first leg of the BBC is only one week away!

On the bottom, the snapper and grouper fishing continues to be excellent, with some amberjack starting to show up. All in all, it’s shaping up for a great May in North Abaco.

Harbour Master Chris Higgs of Abaco Beach Resort at Boat Harbour was excited to report that there have been lots of blue marlin sightings, with a hook up of a 400 pounder recently that bodes well for the upcoming tournaments. There are also lots of yellowfin tuna and dolphin. May should be spectacular in Central Abaco.

In South Abaco, Glen Kelly, Schooner Bay Harbour Master had this to say, “April has shown the wahoo bite getting less voracious as the last of the cold fronts push through the Northern Bahamas, but fear not, the dolphin are picking up!” South Abaco anglers have enjoyed the start of tuna and dolphin, as mild winter water temperatures usher in the summer. Occasional tuna; blackfin, yellowfin (in the 20 -30 pound range) and little tunny have made for some great late afternoon fishing.

The collective local knowledge assures us that going into May and the early summer months there should be lots of action offshore! Teasers are still a popular way to get the dolphin in the mood, and whether you are fishing with ballyhoo or going high speed with artificial lures, remember to keep a school interested with some chumming while you are pulling one in, so that everyone on the boat can get hooked up and enjoy the action!
