Capt. Justin Russell of Hope Town is really excited about the wahoo bite headed to The Abacos. He says the bigger fish will be headed through the area early in the month. Some of these will be in the 50 to 70 pound range, which should be followed by smaller fish, but it will not be uncommon to catch 10 to 15 per trip. Capt. Russell also says to expect a good dolphin bite, as well as yellowfin and blackfin tuna. Capt. Russell’s preferred bait is ballyhoo with a seawitch skirt. Most any color will do and they are durable.

Capt. Perry Thomas also agrees that the cooling waters will signal the start of the wahoo run. Dolphin will be available to those who take the time to find weed lines and other floating structures. Capt. Perry said to remember to bump up trolling speed for wahoo. These fish are fast and you will need to be “moving along” to get their attention. He also agrees there will be a good blackfin and yellowfin tuna bite during the month.
The fish will be responding to the cold fronts so keep your eye on the weather forecasts. Although the fronts can also make it a little “sporty” offshore, it is well worth the effort.
