Offshore Abaco in July will still produce a good billfish bite, best experienced trolling in the 500-to-2500 feet range. Use squid teasers and mullet dredges to bring them into the spread. Trolling rigged ballyhoo with smoker heads and chuggers will produce the bites.
Naked baits and artificial lures that creates lots of action will all draw the attention of billfish to your spread so be prepared.
There are still some mahi mahi around. Look for weed lines and floating debris. If radar fishing offshore, look for flocks of birds to find yellowfin and blackfin tuna. Try trolling cedar plugs and small skirted lures or naked ballyhoo at about 7-to-9 knots. Best gear is 30-to-80 pounds and a fluorocarbon leader.
When the off shore bite is slow, July can be a great month for bottom fishing inshore. Fishing can produce yellowtails, mutton snapper and grouper. Grouper season is open and vertical jigging metal jigs in 80-to-200 feet can produce rockfish and grouper. Bottom fishing in 20-to-50 feet of water with squid will also produce bites. Try slow trolling the reef and grass bars with Yo-Zuri or Rapala diving plugs.
July is a great month to fish in Abaco for a chance of catching multiple species offshore and inshore! Remember to bring your sunblock, it’s going to be hot, come enjoy Abaco’s beautiful weather and great fishing.
