[dropcap]A[/dropcap]s we turn the corner into January, Kevin Sawyer from Island Boy Tackle in Marsh Harbour tells us “The Abacos are headed towards the best months of offshore fishing.” Kevin shared that the wind in December has made getting offshore a bit of a challenge, but he also said things should mellow out in January. Reports throughout Abaco indicate there has been a strong wahoo bite, which should stay strong through January. The fish being brought in are not huge, but are there in good numbers. Standard high speed trolling with mixed colored lures will do the trick. January is also when mahi-mahi will begin to show in Abaco waters. Lots of smaller dolphin were caught during December and the bite should improve going forward. Reef and bottom fishing has been good as well, with plenty of yellowtail and mutton snapper filling fish boxes. Cliff Bootle, Marina Director at Treasure Cay Beach Resort and Marina confirms the action, “When you can get out, lots of wahoo and a good showing of dolphin.” Similar to points south, northern Abaco has been enjoying good reef and bottom fishing, with more yellowtail being brought in, as well as a mixed bag of grouper. Once the weather and wind calm down a bit, Abaco should be the place to be.
