June has been a tuna fest along South Abaco and the word is to points further north as well! Schooner Bay enjoyed being one of the weigh-in points for the 2012 Harbourside Marine Bahamas Rotary Tuna Classic. The largest tuna of the tournament was caught off South Abaco by Team Pokemon, however, angler Andrew Davies 86 pound yellowfin was ruled ineligible on a technicality but nevertheless provided life-long memories.
Mutton snapper have started schooling and are becoming a popular catch for those finding and fishing the top of the wall. Chunking still proves to be the order of the day as the tuna should start to tail off. We look forward to continued success with snapper and grouper. Periods immediately before and after the first full moon in both July and August will see lots of spawning activity for the mutton snapper and a variety of other deep-water reef fish. Elsewhere in the Abacos, the blue marlin bite will begin to wane.
As the summer moves forward, most of the attention will be on bottom fishing. You may try slow trolling with deep diving plugs for grouper. Yellowtail snapper and porgies make for great fun inshore on light spinning gear. It’s a great time to teach your children how to fish and get a couple of good meals!
