Abaco Offshore Forecast – September 2012

Occasional tuna are still to be found off the South Abaco coast through the remainder of August and early September. However, during September most attention shifts to shallower water. A lot of our anglers are getting in the water and enjoying the spiny lobster season and pursuing their quarry with spear and sling! Grouper and snapper are plentiful on the reefs and ledges providing great recreational free diving and dinner fare!

Capt. Clint Kemp is finding time to fish the Atlantic side in the evenings, concentrating on a lot of deep jigging in 100 to 150 feet of water and being rewarded with large yellowtail and mutton snapper. Other anglers are finding the deep water bite equally as good with a 50 pound misty grouper coming into Schooner Bay recently, along with a nice spread of deep water snappers. Deep dropping the 800 to 1000 foot depths is definitely an anticipation game as the electric reel hums and the fish finally break the surface with stomachs distended from the long trip!

September looks to be a great month to visit The Abacos, with some of the warmest water of the year, and many flat calm days with lazy southeast winds to open the fishing grounds up all around the Cays and to the south. Off season fishing in The Abacos is a great “escape”.
