As we prepare this first Abaco Dive Report of fall 2013, a black and yellow zebra butterfly flutters at the window, the morning sky is blue, and white, puffy cumulus clouds are building in the distance—an indication there most likely will be rain showers again this afternoon. The sea is relatively calm and its colors vary from those indescribable shades of turquoise reflected by the sun’s rays to a blue-gray cast by the shadows from the clouds. Although it’s October, the weather is still warm. Air temperature ranges from 74 to 84 degrees and water temperature averages 82 degrees. Humidity is down, a welcomed relief compared to September; days are shorter in length and both sunrises and sunsets have been magical. Thus far, it has been an uneventful hurricane season, and we hope it continues this way. Diving continues to be outstanding with amazing visibility and calm seas. We’ve not experienced any significant algae bloom this summer, which can impact visibility, and jellyfish have been virtually non-existent.

Our guests continue to be amazed at the diversity of marine life and the abundance of reef fish and healthy coral. With this being the transition month between the summer and winter weather patterns, we will see an increase in the number of days with breezes being more north-northeasterly resulting in a slight decrease in both air and water temperatures. However, this shift also increases the clarity of water and colors on the reef along with sightings of larger pelagic fish, like sharks and spotted eagle rays. Expect to also see snapper, grouper, chub, jacks and tang.

Because October is considered the ‘off season’ in Abaco, tourism is at a minimum so this is a perfect time to have Abaco “all to yourself ”!
