On a long-range fishing trip from San Diego, Earl Gill IV landed an extraordinary yellowfin tuna weighing 443 pounds—a staggering 16 pounds more than the existing world record for a yellowfin caught on rod and reel.

Winter Dilemma: To Stay Or Go

As anglers, we are frequently faced with the decision to stay with the game plan or change to another. This is often amplified in the winter due to lethargic fish, less bait and unfavorable conditions.  The first week of last December, I took a day trip from Texas to Louisiana to target flounder and found myself with this dilemma.

Head South For Big Fish This Winter

As the holidays approach and temperatures drop, many will feel the need to scratch that fishing itch. There is no better place to catch your next trophy this winter than down in sunny south Florida.

Little Brown Bugs: Fly Selection for People Who Can Never Find the Right Fly

Changing flies takes time and if you do it often enough, will chew up enough leader and tippet, that you’ll have to re-rig the whole dang thing.  It’s a slippery slope and not less than a few anglers have spent more time tying knots than they have fishing on a given day.  If you are one of these folks, or maybe a novice angler for whom fly selection is a total mystery, let me suggest a simplified approach.

Virginia Angler Breaks 30-Year State Rainbow Trout Record

Grant Bentz of McGaheysville, Virginia, shattered a long-standing state record with a 14 lb., 12 oz. rainbow trout. The fish broke the previous record set in 1993 by Michael Lowe at 14 lbs., 7 oz. Despite knowing many might disapprove, Bentz decided to cook the fish, citing low survival chances for large trout in the summer. Bentz plans to have a replica of the fish made to commemorate his achievement.

The Most Dangerous Dive Site In Florida

This is the Eagle’s Nest sinkhole in Florida. From the surface, it’s just an unremarkable, uninviting, and algae-filled little pond. But this view of it is deceptive. At the bottom of this little pond is a 6-foot-wide vertical tube leading to a massive pitch-black cave room the size of an airplane hanger, and that is just the beginning.
