April marks the start of an exciting fishing season as the warmer waters begin to roll in, creating perfect conditions for anglers. The fishing only gets better as the month progresses, with various species becoming more active. Bottom fishing should be highly productive this time of year. Anglers can expect to reel in plenty of vermilion snappers, mangrove snappers, lane snappers, and triggerfish, all of which provide great action and are excellent table fare.
While targeting these bottom species, don’t be surprised if you hook into a nice cobia. These strong fighters often lurk in the same areas, making them a thrilling and unexpected catch. Cobia are highly prized for their size and strength, adding an extra layer of excitement to your fishing trip.
As always, keep an eye on the skies for the appearance of white butterflies. Their fluttering flight is a telltale sign that it’s time to switch gears and go trolling. Once the butterflies start appearing, it’s the perfect moment to head out and try your luck with trolling for larger species. This year, we’re expecting an excellent mahi season.
