Backcounry Fishing

by Greg Poland

Fishing in the Islamorada area has been great over the past month, winter is almost over and its spring break here in the Florida Keys. With the last of the cold fronts comes a time when I will be switching gears from fishing out in the Gulf of Mexico to the channels and local bridges looking for the silver king. It’s been a great winter season out in the gulf with everything from Spanish Mackerel to Cobia but a few tarpon have been showing up around the bridges and plenty of action in the channels so for the next few months I will be staying a little closer to land and fishing the bridges and channels looking for Tarpon.

This is absolutely my favorite time to be out on the water and if you are looking to go out on a charter this is the best time of the year to fish inshore in the Islamorada area, go down to the marinas and talk to the guides or give me a call I still have some prime time available. If you have a boat and want to catch a tarpon get out your cast net and load up your live well with mullet and get out on the water, I like to use either a 20lb spinning outfit or a small conventional reel much like the one you use for kite fishing for sailfish. I use a 40-60lb leader of fluorocarbon with a circle hook and a bobber so we know where the bait is at all times, find some rolling tarpon and drift the bait back into the strike zone and hold on tight.

It’s just the beginning of Tarpon Season and I will be fishing them any chance I get till the summer so check out next month’s report to see how the season is going, here are a few photos from the last trip to the gulf and a nice mutton from the patches.
