Backcountry Fishing

Capt. Rodney Raffield

Hi Coastal Anglers! These have been trying times for the charter business, but I have managed some charters through this last month. Fishing has been good with plenty of trout and snook and even fair numbers of redfish. Best trout fishing has been on the outside points and on the flats with limits on most every charter. As most of you know trout regulations have changed, which amounts to about half as many fish as we used to keep, better for the species. There are some big tarpon around, but I only target these fish when requested. Snook are in the Islands, but I am still seeing a good bite in the Backcountry as well, with upper slot fish on occasion being produced. I have been catching quite a few mangrove snappers in the rock holes with small shrimp-tipped jigs. As you know I am a Zman and Mr. Wiffelure fan, but the Wiffs are dominating at the moment. You can’t go wrong with a Watermelon Red Flake Wiffelure on a 1/4oz jighead – it is absolutely brutal! Looking for a great stress reliever, give me a call and I can accommodate with a unmatched environment, as well as a fish or two. Till next time be blessed my friends.  Capt. Rodney
