As the June forecast gets typed, May in most of the Bahamas, remains cool and windy; there were good surfing days early in the month and many blown-out days after that. June is bound to be less windy, and one would imagine much hotter. Surfing days on the other hand will most likely decline as we move into the stiller days of summer, when low pressure systems are usually only talked about when a tropical storm is in the vicinity. So there’s that. Then there’s small, east swell for the longboard crowd on islands, like our own, that have plenty of exposure. And there’s still plenty of sunshine to soak up if the waves go flat. Tip: Sunscreen on at least 30 minutes before you get in the water. Save your skin, save the reef below! Looking for a party? The weekend of June 7th and 8th is sandwiched between national holidays on Friday and Monday. Three different Eleuthera settlements—Deep Creek, Palmetto Point and Gregory Town—stage their annual festivals that weekend. Junkanoo in June is held in Nassau. Buy local fruit! Summer’s the time! With no major storms last year, fruit trees, like mango, tamarind and guinep, are dripping with fruit. Check the fruit stalls under Paradise Island Bridge, a.k.a. Potter’s Cay, where much out-island produce ends up. Visitors you may not find it in the stores, so ask around, the islanders are friendly and it’s a great way to boost the local economy.
