Writing this report at the midpoint of September, hurricane season has been decidedly unkind to those of us who seek ocean swell. Our island of Eleuthera, however, as well I imagine in almost all of the Bahama chain, is green and lush as the rain comes down with no nasty storm winds to defoliate the trees. The farmers are happy undoubtedly. So we find the proverbial lining around the cloud. Note: There was a little swell coming in from Gabrielle, and Humberto was still churning as I wrote this, so here’s hoping that the second half of September sent the goods. Now, October! A month that historically has many rideable days, especially if you don’t mind some wind in the mix. Keep in mind spots that, if they don’t actually work better with an onshore wind, still provide some clean sections and wedges. And of course those with maps and compasses will seek those secret spots that work when the wind blows from the north. Swells will be courtesy of cold fronts from the north or hurricanes arriving just in time to salvage some poor surfer’s sanity. The North Eleuthera Sailing Regatta runs Oct. 9-13 centered around Harbour Island. And the popular, annual Ride for Hope now draws hundreds of cyclists from all over the country who swamp the roads of Eleuthera raising money for cancer treatment programs. Some will ride as long as 100 miles this October 26! Gotta give you good leg strength for those bottom turns and cutbacks!
