Bahamas Surf Forecast – August 2011

With a couple tropical storms sending the Bahamas swell in July, surfers in the island chain can only hope for more of the same as the dog days of summer arrive with the month of August.

August is generally characterized as a summer doldrums month but with spiny lobster or crawfish season kicking off August 1, spearfishing makes for good flat day fun. Remember your size limits please!

On the island of Eleuthera, the first weekend of August brings Bay Fest, a homecoming festival in Hatchet Bay. Throughout the islands numerous events are planned for the August Monday holiday celebrating Emancipation Day.

If no storm swells are in the forecast expect flat conditions with an occasional ‘trade’ swell in the 2-to-3 foot range. Winds can be very favorable this time of year – generally light out of the south – which means glassy conditions.

BOA Sixth Annual Surf Camp Highlights

The Bahamas Out Island Adventures (BOA) Sixth Annual Surf Camp saw a record number of local children participate with help from partial and full scholarships and sponsorships. Eight-year old Mattheo Albury, of Gregory Town, participated in Week One and said he fulfilled a long-time desire to learn the sport. Mattheo was sponsored by Coastal Angler Magazine-Flahama, which was kind enough to provide his fee and take advantage of the sponsorship program begun this year by BOA. He finished second in his heat during contest day, scoring a number of good rides in the 2-to-3 foot waves and riding some right to the beach. Mattheo represented the Atlantic Spadefish and made a heartfelt presentation on the species during the final day of camp.

During Week Two, Hatchet Bay’s Chara Sanders, Martin ‘MJ’ Hudson and Gregory Town’s Kishi Albury and Enrique Thompson also charged the surf and enrolled with BOA camp scholarships.

Camp director Tom Glucksmann was impressed with the talent level of the local Eleutheran youths.

“These kids were able to jump right in the surf and catch lots of good rides and without any exposure to sports like wakeboarding surpassed some of the kids who have grown up doing board sports,” he said.

The company has plans to begin a surf camp for local youths with monthly meetings, instruction and contests.
