June isn’t exactly the month to take a surf trip to the Bahamas, or anywhere in the North Atlantic for that matter, but if you like warm weather, warm water and festivals, it’s a great month!
The Long Island Regatta is held the first weekend of June, and is the second largest of its kind in our country. That same long Labour Day weekend, you’ll find dozens of events throughout the archipelago, not the least of which is Eleuthera’s Pineapple Festival. Check out Barraterre’s Homecoming Festival on Great Exuma towards the end of the month.
And when you’re not partying, find a break with full exposure to the small swells that will roll in usually from the east. Islands like San Salvador, Eleuthera and the Abacos have breaks that work on these 2 to 4 foot swells. Winds usually stay nice and light this month and there’s a slim chance for an early tropical system that could send waves our way.
Don’t be tempted to spear any spiny lobster while enjoying the warm, clear waters! Season remains closed until August 1st; no mini-seasons here. Remember, you may think it’s just you taking a few ‘summer crabs’ but multiply that by a thousand other people saying the same thing and it’s a significant impact.
