If William Shakespeare had surfed the Bahamas he might have written ‘Beware the Winds of March,’ not the Ides. But he wasn’t, and he didn’t. So I will. Yes, you can count on seeing your share of ground swell penetrating our island chain this month, but also count on a good share of northeasterly and easterly winds. Keep an eye on breaks that go side-offshore when a wind jogs around to the east. Can’t complain about that, right? The set ups are out there, who needs to name names when you’ve got the guys at magic seaweed (or as my friend calls them ‘tragic algae’) listing them with a click of a button? Quiver tips? Whatever you’re comfortable on in 2-to-6 foot surf and keep your fingers crossed for bigger days and 8-to-10 foot faces. Neoprene needs? Sure, if you feel the cold bring a top or spring suit for those days when the water dips down near that 70 degree mark! And if your friend drops in on you this March, give him a hurt expression and ask ‘Et tu, Brute?’ March also means parents are signing up for Bahamas Out Island Adventures’ Eighth Annual Surf Camp which starts in June. We’re hoping to match or exceed the great camp we had in 2012. As well as a full morning’s worth in the surf, campers cliff jump, drift snorkel, compose music, go to the fish fry and much more!
