While veteran surf travelers aren’t searching Travelocity for airfares to the Bahamas in May, those in search of smaller waves, warm water and sun worship should. Surgical-strike types will want to keep an eye on late-developing, low pressure systems moving off of Cape Hatteras and points north. Your average May usually yields a big, surprise swell from the north, as did its preceding month, and indeed as I type this report big waves continue to pound our shore from a mid-April bombie swell. Of course anyone who follows the weather and the craziness of storm season knows recent Mays have also included pre-season storm swells. These early-forming tropical systems are a real treat, usually forming nearby; a great excuse to get into water that still holds some of its winter cool, while the air is offering a not-as-welcome preview of the coming summer. The coming of the year’s shortest month (its name, anyway) also means two things for us. No. 1. The Pineappleman Sprint Triathlon is just over one month away. The June 7 swim, bike, run looks to break its all-time participation record this year and is part of Gregory Town’s annual Pineapple Festival. We are organizing sponsors. Inbox if you want to participate. Boaters: Hatchet Bay’s sought-after moorings, and dock space, are more readily available in the summer. No. 2. Surf Camp IX preparations continue, and with a third week being offered this year we’ll be busier than ever. Six-day camps start June 23. Limited spaces remain so email and mention that you read CAM’s May Surf Report and we’ll give you 10 percent off camp fees! What!? The Beach Boys said it best, ‘Catch a wave, you’ll be sitting on top of the world’.
