[dropcap]J[/dropcap]uly’s limited number of rideable days are usually augmented by southeast wind swell, and while that might not sound like tons of fun, if you find the right wedgey break, you might be surprised. Water temperatures have begun their inevitable climb beyond the 80 degree mark and that means breeding season for tropical storms. While we always hope they come close enough to power in some swell, we also hope they don’t come too close and shave off your roof ‘s shingles or fruit trees’ foliage. Bursts of extreme summer heat were apparent in June and like Richard Marx sung, “It’s going to be a long, hot summer.”
Follow the party as Harbour Island fills up for American Independence and a week later our own birthday party. Bluff Settlement, Eleuthera also has their homecoming festival around that holiday weekend. Visitors, think visors to protect your face from the sun, I like them ’cause your head breathes. Ladies, think about not shaving your legs a few days before you come to the islands. It might mean the difference between being the no-see- ums’ main course or just their light snack. As always instead of landfill-filling cans of bug repellent think jeans and socks at twilight and nighttime when the bugs are feeding the most. Bring small-wave surfboards, and remember lobster season is CLOSED until August 1st – no mini-seasons here folks. Spots remain for the July 7 week of BOA’s annual youth surf camp.
