Berry Islands Fishing Report and Forecast: Dec. 2013

Angler Robert Gibson with a 204 lb. wahoo—it would have been a worldrecord if he had documented the catch back in 1999. (Current world recording per IGFA is 184 lb. caught 29-Jul-2005 by Sara Hayward in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.) PHOTO SUPPLIED by Herbie Dean.

December should bring a great dolphin (mahi-mahi) and wahoo bite to the Berry Islands, including Great Harbour Cay and Chub Cay. Dolphins and wahoo have been biting great around our chain of islands. Southeast of Big Whale Cay, west of Chub Cay and east of Great Harbour Cay are the primary areas where you will find the fish, anywhere between 300 feet and 800 feet. Artificial lures are the best form of bait. Here is a tip that you may not be aware of, if there is a southeast wind blowing more than 25 knots and it is sustained for more than two to three days, fish get trapped in The Pocket and the fishing is superb. For those who don’t know, The Pocket is considered an area of deep waters near the northwest light. The world famous wahoo point near Great Harbour Cay and Pettit Cay has been living up to its name. The wahoo fishing has been great in this area over the past few weeks. I would like to welcome all anglers to the wahoo capital of the world!
