Bimini Dive Forecast – May 2012

Bimini undersea

May is a great time in Bimini. It is the beginning of our “tourist season,” which is typically Easter Weekend to Labor Day Weekend. The weather is amazing, with light winds, calm seas, and warming waters. The atmosphere on the island is festive, with many returning regulars and new visitors enjoying the many great outdoor activities available on and around Bimini. The conch shacks and sand bars are busy with anglers telling the day’s fish tales and divers discussing the many great discoveries of the day. Our diving in May is special, because we are able to access some sites that are out of reach in the winter due to higher winds. The Nekton/Half Pipe wall is our northern most site and sits on the edge of the deep drop off at the Gulf Stream just north of North Bimini. It starts with a flat pan bottom of 75 feet and protrudes out into a 25 foot tall mini-wall ledge that runs about 200 yards long. Here I have seen tuna, schooling mackerel, dolphins and much more. This is a great place to shoot large numbers of plump lionfish, too. This is a light to no current drift dive, and is great for all experience levels.
