November is upon us and the waters around Bimini and the Northern Bahamas are cooling off. The average water temperature is 80 degrees and the average air temperature is between 75 and 85 degrees. During November, winds from the northeast start to prevail. In the diving world, we call them nor’easters. They bring in cool/cold air and usually blow for two to three days at a time. After they pass, the weather returns to being mild and calm. With the water being cooler, there is less phytoplankton in the water so the visibility can be up to 100-plus feet, the kind of water that the Biminis are world famous for.
The best sites to dive this time of year are the ones off of Cat Cay, the Nodules, Tuna Alley and Victory Reef, all of which are solid extensive coral reef systems that run from north to south. A full 3mm exposure suit is recommended for diving in November. The current remains significant during tidal change. Shark, grouper and stingray encounters on these dives are highly likely, not to mention green and hawksbill turtles.
Looking forward to seeing you in Bimini soon!
