February is always a great month to fish the wide flats and near-shore reefs of Bimini. The bonefish are thick and the schools are large. The average size fish this time of year is generally in the 4-to-8 pound range and for their size these fish are pretty zesty. Occasionally, we have been catching some singles and pairs in the 10 pound range. My favorite tide is the rising tide as the fish come out of the creeks and channels looking for lunch. The water is still on the cool side and the fish will tend to seek the warmer water of the flats as the sun warms the shallows. In February, there are also plenty of permit in the 20 pound range. Natural baits still seem to work best and shrimp and crab are recommended. Due to the potential for windy days when cold fronts move through, at least an 8 weight rod should be your choice. For those seeking a much bigger catch, there are some huge tarpon in the channels. It almost looks like an aquarium. These guys are giants! For a little diversion, the yellowtail snapper bite has been fantastic. Look for a sharp drop off on the edge of the reef. This is where you will find small stacks of fish and plenty of bottom life to support the bait fish.
See you in Bimini soon!
