With June, the summer fishing season begins in earnest. Offshore and inshore watersare getting warmer and warmer. And, weather begins to play a role in your fishing schedule as the summer showers and occasional afternoon thunderstorms become more frequent.
Bonefish will be cruising the flats with the incoming tide and heading to deeper wateras the sun gets higher in the sky. Recent bone catches have been in the 12-pound range. Permit fishing will be good to excellent during the month of June, so you may want to target them as well.
Over the last couple of weeks permit in the 12- to 15-pound range have been caught as well as a 35-pounder. For chasing these elusive trophies, you will want to use a heavier weight rod and more heavily weighted flies.
Here are a couple of tips:
- Practice casting heavier flies. Practice will improve your odds when you are on the water
- Learn to “see”permit. You will want to focus on looking for the darker part of their body, the coal black of their forked tails.
- Place the fly where the fish can see it. Try to drop the fly far enough away from the fish so the splash does not spook the fish but they will see it as it drops through the water column.
Looking forward to seeing you in Bimini soon!
