Bimini Inshore Fishing Forecast – March 2012

Bonefish photoIf you had to pick a month out of the year to fish Bimini, March would be in the top three. The days are getting longer, the water temperature is rising and the fish are definitely on the move. The really good news is that the bones are getting larger, and they are congregating. I like to fish the skinny tides, and you should do the same.

In 1971, a Virginia Beach sportsman, Jerry Lavenstein, and local Bimini bonefish guide, Ansil Saunders, headed out on the Bimini flats to cast their luck and hope for a trophy catch. Lavenstein and Saunders gained immortality that day with what is now the record bonefish, a 16-pound, 3 ounce monster.

If you are seeking alternative species, permit are running in the 25 to 35 pound range, and they will give you a great fight! All you need to do is cruise the North Bimini flats. If you are using spinning gear, live crabs are your bait of choice, and the fly guys can successfully use artificial crab flies. No one pays much attention to the great tarpon fishing (guess the bonefishing is too good), but if you want to catch a sizable tarpon as a diversion, we can get you hooked up.

See you soon in Bimini; a small island with lots of charm!
