Bimini Inshore Fishing Forecast – May 2011

Mutton snapper, grouper and even amberjack will be in the area in good numbers as their “dinner” flows between the cays.

May is the turning point from late spring into the early Bahamian summer.  Water temperature is steadily increasing, changing the behavior of both the fish and the fishermen. The wind is more gentle and focused in the east-southeast quadrant and the sight fishing gets better. For the fish, it means that as the water depth decreases with a lowering tide, the bonefish will move to cooler and deeper water.  For the fishermen, it will mean best fishing will occur in the early morning and late afternoons on a moving tide.  In May you can expect to find larger schools of fish, and the fish will be larger running in the five-to-eight pound range.  Of course your choice of baits is a personal matter but live bait— shrimp, crab, and cut bait—always seem to be what the fish are really looking for.  For those anglers who prefer artificial baits, your skill at presenting the fly or lure to mimic the real thing is the true test of your angling skill!  For those of you who want to get off the flats for a change, you just may want to head to Cat Cay and fish the channel between north and south Cat Cay.  Mutton snapper, grouper and even amberjack will be in the area in good numbers as their “dinner” flows between the cays. North and South Bimini are friendly, fun, family-centric islands with lots to do and explore. On your next fishing trip, bring the entire family–they will have a great time and you and enjoy some of best fishing in the islands!
