Bimini Inshore Fishing Forecast – October 2011

Bonefish Ebbie’s forecast calls for bigger bones (5 to 10 pounds) in October. Photo credit: theaverageangler.blogspto.com.

The fish are biting! Shorter days and a weaker sun are now allowing the inshore waters to cool, which keeps the bonefish on the shallower flats for longer periods of time during the day. When fishing Bimini in October, you will find bigger fish, typically in the 5 to 10 pound range. The best spots would be the north end of the island near East Point. The outgoing tide is the best tide to fish. The bones are feeding on shrimp and crab, along with local bait called “sea turkey meat.” These are small crustaceans found in the sand commonly known as sand fleas. One often overlooked prize fish found in Bimini are tarpon and permit. Large tarpon are prevalent in the Bimini Harbour area around the Bimini Big Game Club and along the channel to Bimini Bay Resort and Marina. Many of these fish are well over 150 pounds. Permit will be in good supply as well. Bottom and reef fishing is excellent particularly around Turtle Rock and Sandy Cay. Grey snapper, lane snapper, and black grouper are the most prevalent species being caught.
