Summer officially arrives this month and there is no better time to fish the flats of Bimini or venture offshore to fishing the nearby reefs. The fishing should continue to be great with bones averaging in the 8-to-10-pound range, possibly some larger. You can count on longer days to heat up the water and the fish will now start to seek slightly cooler and deeper water during the midday. Typically, early to mid-morning and later in the afternoon with an incoming tide are your best options to find the fish in “skinny water”. Permit and tarpon will also be plentiful, as will feisty barracuda. You will find tarpon in and around marina basins and deeper holes. Nearshore reefs will be producing all the snapper and grouper you may want for some great eating and feasting! Cut baits such as conch, shrimp and sardines will work well. If you venture offshore, the mahi-mahi bite should be strong, along with some great yellowfin tuna catching. As usual, look for weed lines, color changes and floating debris and you will find your mahi. For the tuna, look for the birds. Even a single bird can tip you off to tuna below. Sumner is the start of the busy season for Bimini, so join the fun and adventure Bimini has to offer.
