[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he “Summer Flats Season” in Bimini really cranks up with the arrival of May. The waters continue to warm, as does the air temperatures. The windy transition month of April gives way to calmer days making the flats glass-like on many days. This really enhances the ability to sight fish for tailing bones. We find that the fish will be spending more time on the flats feeding, rather than in the deeper water. If you are planning your day, plan to fish the morning incoming tide or the evening incoming. Crab and shrimp natural baits or artificials are top choices. Permit will be prevalent, as will barracuda and tarpon. Look for bigger tarpon in the deeper water near basins and channels. Snapper and grouper will abound in the nearshore reefs for some great table fare. If you venture offshore, you will find increases in mahi-mahi, along with some kingfish. Wahoo have all but disappeared, but you never know. The blue marlin season is upon us so you may get lucky! Hope that you visit the Biminis soon.
