May is really the start of the summer flats fishing season in Bimini. The sometimes brisk winds of April will begin to lay down, the water temperature continues to warm and the inshore fishing will warm up as well. This time of year, the fish generally average in the six- to nine-pound range. As you pole or wade the flats, be aware of moving water near channels during changing tides where the fish will be stalking their next meal. In addition to bones, the flats will hold permit, tarpon and barracuda. Taking a large ‘cuda on a fly is quite the experience! The usual assortment of artificial baits and natural baits will work well. Nearshore reefs will hold plenty of muttonfish, snapper, yellowtail and more. If you catch a trigger fish you will have a very tasty dinner–call me for a recipe! Preferred baits for your reef fishing is cut squid. May can be one of the very best months to fish the Biminis—warm weather, low humidity, and generally calm winds make for a perfect fishing adventure.
