The fishing has been a little slow but it is just a part of the seasonal cycle. The best locations in the world cannot always be red hot! The blue marlin tournament season may have passed but that has not deterred the big blues from showing up around Bimini. A recent hook-up resulted in a 600-pounder gleaning 300 yards of line and broke off. And as if showing off, a 400-pounder free jumped right next to the boat! They are definitely still around and should remain into August migrating past Bimini.
For the big blues, use large baits (big mullet, mackerel of squid) and troll slowly. If you decide to troll with artificials, again you want to use larger lures and troll even more slowly. There should be plenty of mahi-mahi under and around the weedlines that are forming with the currents and calm winds. For those of you that want to do a little deep dropping for snapper, you’ll want to fish in 600-to-1,000 feet of water with barracuda chunks or squid.
Bimini is a great run in the summer months for boaters from South Florida. Check the weather and enjoy a great weekend whether you are coming from the States or from another Bahama island. It’s always good to spend some time on Bimini!
