According to Captain Billy Black, September should bring a good swordfish bite off Bimini. The best technique for night fishing for swords is to drift in 1200-to-1500 feet of water using big squid with swordfish lights placed 15 feet above the baits. Line depths should be 100, 200 and 300 feet down. Blue marlin, though not large, will be migrating past Bimini as well. A mixture of lures and natural bait should work for these fish. Trolling speeds of 7-8 knots is best.

Bimini Bay Resort and Marina dockmaster David Rolle reported that with the water starting to cool in September there will be kingfish in good supply, as well as an occasional wahoo. The dolphin bite has slowed somewhat, but don’t be surprised if you run into some around weedlines and other floating structure. Live baiting under weed lines should be productive. For bottom fishing, David suggests deep dropping in 600-to-1,000 feet of water for red snapper and queen snapper. Suggested bait is squid covered with barracuda.

Emil Potier from Bimini Sand Resort and Marina on South Bimini is reporting that the offshore fishing has slowed but the reef fishing and deep dropping has been quite good with great catches of yellowtail snapper and grouper. A few small tuna have been reported as well. The water has been incredible with many, many days of flat calm making boating a real pleasure. Things offshore should start to pick up mid-September as the water begins to cool.
