June is usually The Blue Marlin Bonanza, tuna, dolphin will continue to build and some wahoo still will show some signs of life.
The water will begin to boil in June and with warm waters the fish will become very picky, so lighter pound lines (15 to 20 pound) seem to induce dolphin catches and a quicker pace, about 6 to 7 knots will get a few wahoo to bite.
Last year in the middle of June, we had three wahoo from 20 pounds to 37 pounds, so we know they will still be around if they follow the last few years trend. A heavier lure than the top poppers we all troll for dolphin or marlin will do the trick in any spread.
Blue marlin has been spotty and finicky so far, so expect to see more knock downs this June than last year. These fish have been so picky as they show up in your spread, charging your baits and then just seem to fade into the blue, just inches before they have reached the hook! We have made every type of offering, including the bait and switch routine (pull the bait, while floating another one down to them) to entice them to bite, but they don’t seem to want to play any of our games.
Deep dropping has been very steady with great catches every time out. So if you have your electric reels, be sure to have some fresh barracuda sliced up and ready for your hooks. I assure you, if you’re not anxious and don’t retrieve your line after the first strike, you can come up with two to three yellow eye and/or queens depending on how deep you are.
Yellow tail, grouper, and mutton have been steady, seeming to get better with every week. The key is fresh bait and plenty of chum. Once the chum dries up, they are gone!
