The wahoo have arrived in Bimini and we are enjoying some great fishing. October was red hot with wahoo and we can expect November to be even better. Reports from Seacrest, Blue Water Resort and Bimini Big Game Club are that boats are catching four to eight fish each boat and fish are up to 60 pounds.

At Bimini Big Game Club, we are presenting our third Wahoo Smackdown under a new format. Some of the new rules will include a limit on how far you can go to catch these fish and even the playing field for all to fish specific distances from Bimini.

Want some inside tips? Well here’s a few. Wire line some of your 50’s tournament reels and then hold on tight. I found that Islander Lures in bright colors give you the best opportunity along with a cigar weights from two to three pounds. Be sure to use a 200 pound leader off of the cigar weight of about 12 feet, then the lure. The big secret is to be continuous in marking where you get the strikes, as the wahoo seem to patrol the same area in schools and seem to be very territorial. So when you find them, mark them on your GPS and make repeated runs over that area. Leave the 30 pound rods and reels at home.

Deep dropping continues to top the list in catches made and seems like a win-win every time out. As last month’s issue indicated, the yelloweye snappers are in 650 to 750 feet of water and you can find the queen snappers in about 1400 feet of water. These fish are very concentrated and easy to find IF you have a good depth sounder. Bimini yellowtail, grouper and bottom fishing, if last year indications are true, will continue strong through November. This time of year the best bet for bottom fishing will be just South of Isaacs.

Just 48 miles away. Always remember, we have the best sunsets and we’re so close that on a clear night you can see the glow of Miami.

Until ‘Next Tide’, tight lines!
