The gin clear waters are so beautiful around the Bimini’s in August that the only word to describe it is perfection. The 100 foot visibility, paired with 85 degree water temperatures create the most tranquil and gorgeous diving conditions anywhere in the Caribbean. Droves of French grunts, lane snappers, and goggle eyes swarm the reefs. Eagle rays and both green and hawksbill turtles are common all through the month of August. Sites like Hawksbill Reef in the north and Victory Reef in the south are wonderful sites to encounter these animals. The southwest side of South Bimini has a beautiful reef that is right off the beach. It is easily accessible from Bimini Beach Club for snorkeling or shore-diving, and probably the best place to see Eagle rays all month long. The coolest critters in Bimini in August are massive manta rays. Often having wing spans of over 10 feet, these gentle giants cruise our waters in the summer in search of plankton and krill. They are relatively common in the channel between North and South Bimini, but it is not safe to dive there due to current and boat traffic. Our best luck spotting these “devil” rays has also been on the shallow reefs right on the southwest side of South Bimini. Remember, if you are diving from shore be sure to bring a dive flag or surface marker to insure boaters are aware that there is “a diver down”.
