February is a stellar month to scuba dive the waters around Bimini. The waters are even more clear than usual, with visibility well over 100 feet almost every day. The cold fronts that roll in from the east coast of the U.S. can bring strong winds, but also push the Gulf Stream even closer (almost onto the beach) than normal to the island causing the breathtakingly crystal clear water. Cooler water temperatures are common this month, dipping to the mid to low 70s. Most divers are wearing a full 3mm suit, with gloves and booties. As always, a hood can help so much to preserve your body heat, and is recommended for anyone who tends to get cold. Without a doubt, the coolest thing to see in Bimini during February are the Great Hammerheads. This month, depending on water temperature, is often the peak of activity for these monstrous and magnificent gentle giants. Ranging in size from 9 to 14 feet in length, these remarkably unique looking creatures migrate to the western waters of Bimini. Shallow water encounters with Great Hammerheads are quite reliable, and offer an exceptional chance to take in a first hand, close up look at a critically endangered species of shark. The ample days available between cold fronts this month allow for a more diverse exploration of the many and varied dive sites around the Bimini Islands. Ranging from Bull Run and Victory Reefs south of Cat Cay to the Sponge Wall north of Bimini. The offshore currents tend to be a little milder in the winter, and allows for a much more thorough investigation of all the hidden crevices, overhangs, and canyons on sites like Tuna Alley and the Nodules that we are often forced to drift other times of the year. These sites have the most diversity of marine life found around the Bahamas, and its super exciting to get a chance to take your time and truly search for some unique and rare critters. All in all, February is an excellent month for some seriously exciting and one of a kind adventures below the waters of Bimini. Hop on the seaplane, find a room, get underwater, and fall in love with the diving in Bimini.
