Springtime returns to Matagorda! The days grow longer and milder and our fishing options increase as water levels return to normal. Equinox tides bring life back to areas drained by winter winds.
Wadefishing is a solid option this month. It’s still a great time to hunt for a trophy class trout in East Matagorda Bay. Drull’s, Halfmoon, 3 Beacons and the Chinquapin reefs are all good locations as are south shoreline spots like Catchall, Hog Island and Brown Cedar Flats. Topwaters, Corkies and assorted soft plastics are all productive offerings. Wading the guts and sloughs on the south shoreline of West Matagorda Bay with paddletails and topwaters is a great option for redfish.
Drifting deep shell is also productive this month. A live shrimp or Gulp under a Coastal Cork is a reliable offering as are soft plastics hopped across scattered shell. Watch closely for mullet as they will tell you where the fish are.
For shorebound anglers March is a great month for catching giant black drum at the jetties. Cracked crab and cut bait fished on bottom will get some big pulls by oversized redfish and black drum.
Kayakers will find good numbers of redfish in marsh ponds. Look for pods of redfish tailing and backing as they root small shrimp out of the newly emerging grass. A tequila gold paddletail is tough to beat as is a chartreuse and white clouser minnow.
Come on down and let’s go fishin’!
