September is one of my favorite months for so many reasons. But at the top of the angling list—the reason that stands out year after year—is my love of chasing albies up and down the beach on Nantucket. For the last 7 years, I have set my vacation around the time the alibies show up on the island.
You may say I’m crazy after the 4th day and close to 3000 casts, taped and blistered fingers, and doses of Advil each morning and night to keep the pain at bay, but the thrill of seeing those mini explosions and blistering runs makes it all worthwhile. Yes, the seals are a pain in the caudal fin, and yes, it would be a heck of a lot easier to travel by boat rather than by bouncing Jeep up and down the shore, but there’s no other place I’d rather be in September than on the beaches of Nantucket with a salami and provolone sandwich on Portuguese bread in one hand and my pink albie rod in the other while standing in the ocean—just me, my excitement, and my zoom zooms.
Deadly dicks, crippled herring and Daddy Mac lures (my new fave) fill the back of my Jeep and are my go-to lures.
My Angler-2-Angler tip this month: If you’re surfcasting for albies, bring an egg! For those of you that put salami on the end of your hook, I don’t mean attach a hard- boiled egg to your line. I’m always open to trying different things, but not that different.
For some reason, I have fought all the recommendations to give a casting egg a try. Well, after meeting up with Scott from Salty’s Wooden Lures at the MSBA Expo this year and listening to yet another lesson on the virtues of casting eggs, I am going all in this September. I’m packing a dozen, so let it be known, this is the year of the egg….the casting egg.
This 8.5 lb. false albacore fell for a Daddy Mac Albie Jig burning across the surf.
