April will bring the start of “be ready for anything” season! The word in the Exumas is that Highbourne Cay has been red hot for dolphin and should continue thru April. Staniel Cay should also be red hot as well. The high winds have subsided and clear skies should prevail for the month. Massive schools of skip jack and blackfin tuna arrived this past month. Small rigs with multiple blue and white feathers work well. These both make great live bait rigs.
The water temperatures are a little warmer as predicted and blue and white marlin should now be around. Wahoo are still on the wall, and larger fish can be expected. Find the birds and find the fish. Bait-wise, run a swimming ballyhoo with a small chin weight and a small blue and white, or blue and green, Ilander lure or Jap feather. Put them way back in the spread and the larger lures close behind the teasers. This is great time to start running “bowling pins” in the calmer water.
Thanks to those who emailed me regarding the sailfish catches around the Exumas and the rest of the Bahamas. Keep the mail coming, I’m keeping track! We want to know if the sailfish population around the Bahamas is increasing.
