Wahoo fishing dominates February, always has and probably always will. There are reasons for that and this year is no exception. Although the tried and true colors of black and red, or purple and black will produce good strikes, throw a green or bright pink in the mix. This past January was the best wahoo fishing in over ten years. Wahoo to 64 inches, generally in the 70 pound range, and good numbers made for some really memorable fishing for our guests. Ten to 14 fish on a three-quarter day charter is pretty good. Warmer water temperatures, now in the mid to upper 70’s rather than the usual 68-to-69 degrees, may stay with us for February. If the temperature holds at a steady 76-to-78 degrees there will be a whole slew of great fishing early. So this month you may want to break out a couple of those big marlin lures and see what happens. Once you’ve gotten the limit on pelagic blue water fish, the deep drop snapper fishing should also start getting pretty good. The 400-to-600 foot range should be your targeted depth. Squid, glow beads, and a few drops to the bottom should do the trick. I’ve actually started using 100 pound test for the line to the hook on my rigs. You will want to change it out regularly and eliminate bringing sharks to the boat. That shark death spin can really wreak havoc on your rigs and can be so dangerous. There are also new regulations regarding sharks. Possession and fishing for sharks is now banned in all Bahamian waters. I urge all visitors to check with the fishing laws when checking into Customs. There will be enforcement of new regulations this year for sure.
