Exuma Fishing Forecast – January 2012

Wahoo fishing this month will be at its prime. Incoming schools of hungry wahoo will be the focus for everyone headed offshore. It will be time to put away the small gear and break out the 50 pound class tackle. Fish will begin to be larger in the Exumas, 50 pound to upwards of 70 pound fish will be common. You may only get one chance at a big on, so keep tackle checked and baits running strait and below the surface. Massive schools of bait (flying fish) will be here as well, so a blue and white Islander or something similar, and double hooked horse ballyhoo will be red hot. Run a solid black feather rigged similarly to mix up the spread. A few dolphin may still show up so a green and yellow feather close to the boat is also a good change if the colors you are running aren’t working. The wahoo bite won’t be hot all day, so when the fishing slows, try dropping a 3 to 5 ounce yellow or white jig tipped with ballyhoo or squid chunk on the reef area. Look in 40 to 60 feet of water. Grouper will be closer this time of year as water temperatures drop. January may also start to show some white marlin and sailfish. All in all, the Exuma’s will be a hot fishing destination over the next couple of months.
