Exuma Fishing Forecast – March 2012

Exuma wahoo photo
This could be the year for more multiple digit wahoo in Exuma than ever before.

In February, the fishing remained strong. Dolphin sizes have increased, and tuna birds have begun to show early in our area of the Central/Southern Bahamas. This location seems to be one of the doorways for fish migrating to and from the Bahamas. Screaming strikes for those not prepared for the bite are being heard around Exuma docks. The key this month is to be prepared. Unlike the Northern Bahamas, there will be larger wahoo making their way into our area, so consider yourself warned! Since there were 70 pound plus fish caught early in the year, this could be the year for more multiple digit wahoo than ever before. I for one, will be prepared for 100 pound-plus. There have been several seasons of slow fishing in and around the Exumas, but this year we are making the most of it! Run the baddest and the biggest eyed baits in your arsenal. Increasing numbers of sailfish being caught in the Exumas is baffling, but certainly not unwanted. Keep me posted of any sails caught in Exuma Sound; if you catch any while fishing the area, shoot me an email at drowe@batelnet.bs; I’m keeping a log. Send me a photo as well. During March in Exuma, you want to stay alert and hold on. Fishing will be hot!
