Charter Capt. Cal Lang, Jr. is excited about the upcoming Offshore Kingfish Tournament, a new feature in the Second Annual Historic St. Marys Fishing Classic, June 3-5. It will be a family affair for this local fishing family, with Cal’s son in one boat and Cal and his wife in another.
“That’s one of the great things about the Fishing Classic,” Lang said. “There’s nothing more fun than spending a day on the water with family, and a little friendly competition makes it even more exciting.”
Lang said that the waters of Coastal Georgia and Northeast Florida are especially fertile grounds for the six species that qualify for the inshore tournament including redfish, speckled trout, flounder, black drum, sheepshead and whiting. The new kingfish competition is just icing on the cake.
When asked what advice he might give to hopeful anglers, Lang said, “Pay attention. Keep your lines in the water, and check them after each bite.”
Lang knows what he’s talking about having been an avid fisherman since he was a small boy. His conquests include a 700-pound shark and numerous tournament wins including placing in national tournaments. Lang has been featured on popular fishing television shows as well.
In addition to the six-species inshore and offshore kingfish events, this year’s fishing classic will also feature a Kayak Catch Photo Release Tournament, a Redfish Jackpot Tournament, and—back by popular demand—the Free Kids Fishing Tournament.
Tournament Director Jerre Brumbelow encourages anglers at all levels to participate in the tournament.
“It’s all for a great cause. And with so many prizes, there’s a good chance for everybody,” he said.
The fishing area extends from Glynn County in Georgia to Flagler County in Florida. Proceeds will benefit Justin’s Miracle Field, Methodist Boys Home, Rotary Club of Camden County Foundation and the Shriners Hospital for Children.
The inaugural fishing classic was held in 2015 with assistance and support from the St. Marys Downtown Development Authority. The Seconnd Annual Historic St. Marys Fishing Classic will include three days of fishing, food, entertainment, seminars and cash prizes. Tournament headquarters will be at the Howard Gilman Memorial Waterfront Park on the St. Marys’ waterfront. Registration is now open at www.HistoricStMarysFishingClassic.com or by calling 912-882-3512.
Current sponsors of the tournament include Knuckleheads, K-Bay 106.3, Barlow Insurance, Rick’s Bait & Tackle, Zaxby’s, Knucklehead’s Kayak Adventures, Buccaneers Bait & Tackle, St. Marys Boat Services, East Coast Land Care Inc., Electric Avenue DJ and Sound Company, Crystal Pittman Insurance Agency, and Budweiser.
