With this years continued warm temperatures the flounder run is a good bit extended, but now is THE time, last year’s main ‘run’ didn’t happen until December as well and last into January. The actual flounder run, or fall migration, has been evolving since September when the flatfish began concentrating in upper estuary marsh cuts. The unseasonably warm temperatures extend the amount of time the fish will stay in the bays.
I spoke with Captain Joey Barnett of Galveston to get his take on it “If you think of the bays as a big funnel it will give you a better picture of how the flounder slowly begin to concentrate at the top of the system and then as they move across the bay as the season progresses. At any time during the fall you can find and catch good flounder. This month will be the best as the fish concentrate in main channels and passes IF we get the big fronts we need to flush the bait out of the bay”.
Capt. Joey will be fishing the lower bay and river cuts between Freeport and Galveston this month and can be reached at (979) 799-5421. Gulp curl tail mullet and Chicken Boy Bubba Cluckers rigged on ¼ ounce or heavier jigheads work well in shallower water, but if you’re going for bigger fish in deeper water you can’t beat the original Flounder Pounders.
