Fort Pierce Offshore Fishing Report and Forecast: December 2016

With cooling water and air temperatures, December is here. With that being said, it is sailfish time! This is the time to find a more abundant stock of sailfish in the waters off the Treasure Coast. With the water temperatures dropping to our north, this will push the sailfish into the area and they will join with the resident sailfish that are here throughout the year.

Sailfish are the most sought after sportfish in our local offshore waters. These fish can be found from 80 foot depths on out.

The most common method for targeting sailfish is to troll rigged ballyhoo with a circle hook on 25-to-30-pound tackle.  This tackle is enough for a good fight and will allow you to quickly get the fish to the boat without tiring them out too much.  The circle hook rig will allow the hook to get hooked in the corner of the mouth instead of a jay hook in which the sailfish could swallow causing internal damage.

When getting a sailfish boat side, please get a quick picture without handling the fish too much and revive it as soon as possible to fight another fight.

During this time of year, if wanting to get out and get hooked up with a sailfish please watch the weather forecast. With the cool and cold fronts coming through the area, the winds will pick up and sea conditions will build. Catching is great, but keep it safe and have a good time.  Catch them up!
