Grand Bahama Dive Forecast – December 2012

December is forecasted to be a dry, cool month. The water temperature has lowered to the mid-70s and we recommend divers bring their full wetsuits. If you are “thin blooded” you will more than likely use a suit that is 5mm thick. For sure, those of us in the Bahamas will be upgrading to 7mm—we can’t take this very “cold” water. The visibility is continuing to increase with the cooling water and air temperatures. The reefs have been swept clean of sediment and the clear water can extend your visibility to 100-plus feet. Diving the deeper wrecks, as well as the shallow sites between 40 feet and 50 feet, is an absolute pleasure. Crystal clear blue water creates the right environment for dramatic pictures and the beams of sunlight can be seen dancing on the white sand as deep as 50 feet, mingling with the shadows cast on the sand by lazy sharks and other reef critters swimming around. Your list of choice dive sites should include the deep wrecks as well as the medium and shallow sites where the colors are vibrant. Make sure you bring a wind-breaker for the surface intervals. Grand Bahamas’ undersea world comes alive during the winter months. Do yourself a favor and “escape” to our island in the stream.
